This Latin Vulgate Bible produced in England around 1230 is just one of the Fisher's most recent acquisitions highlighted in the current issue of The Halcyon, the newsletter of the Friends of the Fisher Library. Although the Fisher has rich Biblical holdings, this Bible is the first manuscript copy of a complete Bible held between two boards at the library. "Given that (with the exception of coins) no other artefact survives in greater numbers from the thirteenth century than Bibles," writes P.J. Carefoote, "this was a rather surprising omission. It is one, however, that has now been corrected and another item from my medieval 'bucket list' can be crossed off the list."

The latest issue also features the Fisher's Director, Anne Dondertman, writing about another exciting new acquisition: the iconic horticultural work Hortus Eystettensis, published in Nuremberg in 1613. (This book was also the first item to be featured in the Fisher's new display case.) Fisher librarian Liz Ridolfo, who was recently hired as the library's new Special Projects Librarian, writes about a unique and exceptional piece of Canadiana: a sixty-two page pamphlet of Lucy Maud Montgomery poems, believed to have been published between 1903 and 1905, so a few years prior to the publication of Anne of Green Gables. Other articles include an examination of the books in the Milton A. Buchanan Collection of Spanish and Italian Literature, and a detailing of the Marshall McLuhan Library by Jason Brown, who catalogued the collection.
