New Books

Artificial Intelligence in Facial Trauma, Oral Diseases, and Systemic Health / by Pham T.D., Holmes, S., Chatzopoulou, D., Coulthard, P. (2026)

This book explores the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare, focusing on cranio-maxillofacial trauma, oral health, and systemic disease. Part I establishes the foundations with core traditional machine learning and deep learning methods, imaging pipelines from classical features to CNNs and vision transformers, data augmentation, explainable AI, and sequential data approaches including RNNs, LSTMs, transformers, fuzzy recurrence plots, and scalable recurrence graph networks. Parts II–IV highlight clinical applications. In facial trauma, chapters cover injury patterns and AI diagnostics as well as text-based mortality prediction and mandible network analysis. Surgical planning and simulation are addressed through 3D reconstruction, patient-specific implant design, outcome prediction, and workflow integration, with real-world examples in orthognathic surgery and fibula free flap reconstruction. Postoperative infection risk prediction is presented through multimodal monitoring. Oral health applications include AI for caries and periodontal disease, pediatric imaging enhanced by vision-language models, and cancer screening for early detection, biomarker discovery, and precision medicine. Oral–systemic links, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, are analyzed using tensor models and recurrence-based methods. Part V integrates trauma, oral health, and systemic conditions, and concludes with ethical, legal, and policy considerations, as well as future directions in federated learning, digital twins, and global health equity.

Inclusive Radiology: Fostering Diversity and Equity in Academic and non-Academic Settings / by Keller-Yamamura, S. & Yamamura, J. (2025)

This book offers a new perspective of an increasingly important topic area of gender equity and diversity in health care, listed in the WHO SDGs. Facts and figures on the national and international status of diversity and gender equity in radiology are juxtaposed with specific recommendations for improvement and awareness, providing thought-provoking impulses for the next generation of physicians as well as for the already existing leadership level to increase the general awareness of this important topic. The first part describes, in different areas of radiological research, the study situation on gender aspects and women's advancement in academic science. The diversity of radiological research areas, from pediatric radiology, neuro- and interventional radiology are presented with their different impact on gender parity. In addition to international and national studies on career development, part two addresses the barriers and facilitators in radiology, and focus areas for career development including mentoring aspects, psychological aspects, and their promotion. Conditions that can hinder academic career equality such as structural inequality, sexual harassment, and examples of discrimination in everyday clinical life are presented in contrast. On top of recommendations for structural improvement, also regarding pregnancy and family planning, the benefits of a diverse radiology department, and how this can be achieved, are highlighted in the last part of the book.

The Dental Teacher: A Reference Guide to Instructional Strategies and Evaluation Principles / by Baiju, R.M. & Thomas, S. (2025)

This book serves as a reference guide for dental teachers at all career stages as well as aspiring dental educators who aim to improve their teaching methods, student learning outcomes and enhance the reputation of their dental school. Each chapter comprehensively discusses key aspects of the topic including instructional strategies, evaluation principles and self-directed learning. Different learning models like classroom teaching, small group learning, chair side teaching in the clinics to modelling and simulation are discussed as well as principles of assessment including setting up a question paper for written examination to more objective practical and clinical assessment strategies such as OSCE, OSPE and OSVE. The topics covered in each chapter are chosen based on current evidence from dental educational research and range from educational objectives to mentoring and work place based assessment among dental students. Lymphoproliferative and Granulomatous Disorders of the Oral Cavity: A Clinical and Microscopic Approach / by Fonseca, F.P., Pontes, H.A.R., Vargas, P.A., Assis de Mendoca, G.R., and Henao, J.R. (2025) Book Cover

This book describes the most important lymphoproliferative and granulomatous disorders that may affect the oral and maxillofacial region. It discusses infectious, non-neoplastic and neoplastic conditions whose diagnoses are very challenging, given their extremely complex and heterogeneous characteristics. Written by worldwide experts in oral medicine, oral pathology and different medical specialties, the 46 chapters are richly illustrated by clinical, radiographic and microscopic images that comprise more than 1,000 illustrations. They are organized in the following sections: general overview and clinical presentation, microscopic findings, and immunohistochemistry and/or genetics. This work follows the current guidelines of the World Health Organization classifications and represents the first scientific resource dedicated exclusively to this topic, which will significantly contribute to improve diagnosticians' ability to recognize lymphoproliferative and granulomatous disorders in this clinical setting. Lymphoproliferative and Granulomatous Disorders of the Oral Cavity is aimed to health professionals from various specialties, including pathologists and clinicians, as well as dental and medical students.
